Three New Initiatives by ECI to Improve Electoral Processes
Panaji : The Election Commission of India (ECI) has launched three key initiatives aimed at enhancing the accuracy of electoral rolls and improving the voter experience. These reforms follow the vision outlined by Chief Election Commissioner Shri Gyanesh Kumar during the recent Conference of Chief Electoral Officers held in March, attended by Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi.
One of the major steps includes the electronic integration of death registration data from the Registrar General of India. This aligns with Rule 9 of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, and Section 3(5)(b) of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969 (amended in 2023). With this system, Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) will receive timely notifications of registered deaths, allowing Booth Level Officers (BLOs) to verify the data through field visits without awaiting formal applications under Form 7.
In a voter-centric move, the design of the Voter Information Slip (VIS) is being upgraded. The revised VIS will feature the voter’s serial and part numbers in a larger font for easier identification, helping both voters and polling officials navigate the electoral roll more efficiently.
Additionally, all BLOs, appointed under Section 13B(2) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, will now be issued standard photo identity cards. This will help voters easily identify BLOs during door-to-door verification and registration drives, ensuring better interaction and trust during the election process.
These initiatives mark a progressive step towards a more responsive and transparent electoral system.
