Goa Mahila Congress Protests in Chinchinim, Demands Strict Action Against Doctor Accused of Rape

MARGAO: The Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress staged a protest in Chinchinim on Monday, calling for the immediate sealing and permanent closure of the clinic run by Dr. Samuel Arawattigi, who was recently arrested by Cuncolim Police in connection with a rape case. The accused is currently in 14-day judicial custody as per court directives.

Leading the protest, Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress President Dr. Pratiksha Khalap condemned the alleged crime, which involves a nurse working at the clinic, and demanded that Dr. Arawattigi’s medical license be revoked without delay.

“This is a heinous and shameful act. Though he is in custody now, releasing him could pose a risk of repeated offense. His clinic must be shut permanently, and his medical registration suspended. We will not stay silent. We will fight for justice,” Dr. Khalap stated firmly.

Zilla Panchayat Member Mitchel Rebello praised the courage of the survivor, emphasizing the emotional toll of such trauma. “It takes immense bravery to come forward. Doctors are meant to protect life, not violate it. We stand in solidarity with the survivor,” she said.

Manisha Usgaonkar, General Secretary of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee, expressed deep concern over the government’s silence on increasing crimes against women.

“How many more incidents will it take for the government to act? Women’s safety is being compromised every day. The Chief Minister had promised action—where is that action now?” she questioned.

South Goa District Congress Committee President Savio D’Silva reaffirmed the party’s stance:

“The Goa Congress is with the survivor. We will ensure that justice is served and that such crimes do not go unpunished.”

The protest drew the participation of several Mahila Congress leaders, citizens, and concerned locals—all demanding swift and strong action against the accused and justice for the survivor.
