Minister Vishwajeet Rane Charts Bold Wildlife & Environmental Agenda for Goa
Panaji, Goa: In a high-level meeting chaired by Forest Minister Vishwajeet Rane, key officials including Navin Kumar (CF Wildlife), Pravin Kumar Raghav (CCF), Kamal Datta (PCCF), Jiss Verky (DCF North), Santosh Reddy (DCF South), and other forest department members convened to strategize a comprehensive roadmap for environmental protection and wildlife conservation in Goa.
Among the key highlights was the announcement of the upcoming ‘Save the Frog’ campaign, which aims to raise awareness and protect frog habitats during the monsoon season. The initiative reflects the government’s focus on preserving biodiversity while promoting ecological sensitivity.
To enhance green cover, a state-wide tree plantation drive is scheduled for World Environment Day, targeting both rural and urban areas with a focus on native species to maintain ecological balance. In addition, strategic plantation drives will ensure minimal disruption to existing natural ecosystems.
In light of recent crocodile sightings, a crocodile population survey is currently underway. To bolster public safety, warning signage will be installed in key habitats to prevent human-wildlife conflict.
The minister has also directed field officers to maintain detailed activity logs, which will be personally monitored to ensure transparency and accountability within the department.
Further measures include:
Assessment of waterhole retention capacity to secure water availability for wildlife
Ecological studies on leopards and Indian gaurs to better understand their behavior and habitats
Community engagement programs to promote human-wildlife coexistence
Mapping of critical animal corridors to ensure safe wildlife movement
Establishment of wildlife veterinary hospitals and rescue and rehabilitation centers
Formation of rapid response teams for wildlife emergencies
Minister Rane emphasized the importance of multi-pronged strategies and collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure a greener, safer Goa for both its people and wildlife.
“These initiatives reflect our unwavering commitment to safeguarding Goa’s rich biodiversity while fostering a culture of conservation and coexistence,” said the minister.
