FDA Cracks Down on Unlicensed and Unhygienic Food Units Across Goa

Panaji : The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) teams intensified their statewide surveillance operations on May 6, taking stringent action against multiple violators to ensure food safety and public health.

Mormugao: In a decisive move, the FDA team ordered an immediate shutdown of a wholesale unit found operating without a valid license. Further inspections exposed serious violations at a manufacturing unit producing popular local items such as sausages, bebinca, dodol, and various masalas. A separate repacking unit handling groceries, cereals, pulses, and spices was also operating without mandatory licenses. Both units were directed to cease operations until they meet all regulatory requirements.

Additionally, a fast-food vendor found operating in the open was penalized and instructed to relocate their business indoors. These critical enforcement actions were led by DO South, Shri Shailesh Shenvi, and FSOs Smt. Sonal Govekar and team.

Colva and Salcete: Re-inspections were conducted at previously flagged establishments, with the FDA team reporting full compliance and improvements. Hygiene checks at three more restaurants were carried out, and inspection reports were issued for continued monitoring.

Margao: In a disturbing incident, a restaurant that had earlier been warned for unhygienic conditions on April 28, 2025, was found to have made no improvements. Operating in severely unhygienic conditions, the establishment was slapped with a ₹20,000 fine under Sections 55 and 56 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The inspection was conducted under the supervision of Designated Officer Smt. Sanjyot Kudalkar (South Goa), along with FSOs Shri Madhav Kavlekar, Miss Pradiksha Chopdekar, and Shri Amardeep Gaude.

“This action sends a clear message: we have zero tolerance for those who compromise public health. Our teams remain committed to ensuring that every bite Goans take is safe and hygienic,” said an FDA spokesperson.

The FDA has assured continued vigilance and urges all food operators to strictly adhere to the required standards and licensing norms.
