Monsoon Mayhem: Porvorim Bypass Paralyzed as Torrential Rains Expose Infrastructure Flaws

Porvorim : A section of the Porvorim bypass was left submerged under water on Tuesday following relentless monsoon rains, causing massive traffic snarls and leaving hundreds of commuters stranded. The flooding, which many attribute to the ongoing flyover construction, has sparked public outrage and raised serious questions about the quality and planning of the infrastructure.

Vehicles were forced to wade through knee-deep water, while pedestrians struggled to navigate waterlogged footpaths. With traffic coming to a virtual standstill, frustration grew among daily commuters who found themselves stuck for hours.

Residents and local commuters have blamed poor drainage systems and negligent construction work for the flooding. “Every monsoon it’s the same story. But this time, the situation is worse due to the construction debris and blocked water flow,” said a local shopkeeper.

The incident has once again brought into focus the urgent need for monsoon-resilient urban planning and robust drainage infrastructure. Experts are calling for stricter accountability and better coordination between contractors and civic bodies.

Authorities are now under mounting pressure to take immediate corrective measures and ensure that such disruptions do not recur during the peak monsoon season. Meanwhile, the Public Works Department (PWD) has assured that a detailed inspection will be conducted and remedial steps will be initiated on priority.

As rains continue to lash the state, the Porvorim flooding serves as a stark reminder of Goa’s vulnerability to infrastructural lapses in the face of extreme weather.
