Monsoon Mayhem in Calangute: Uprooted Mango Tree Destroys 5 Cars, Causes ₹9 Lakh in Damages

Calangute : Panic struck the bustling Khobra-Waddo locality in Calangute on Wednesday when a large mango tree came crashing down on five parked cars, causing property damage estimated at over ₹9 lakh. The incident, believed to be triggered by heavy winds and root decay, has sparked concerns about public safety and tree maintenance in the area.

According to eyewitnesses, the tree — reportedly old and showing signs of rot — was unable to withstand the monsoon winds. Without warning, it toppled, crushing a row of vehicles parked along the roadside. The impact left several cars with caved-in roofs, shattered windshields, and extensive body damage.

The Pilerne fire station responded swiftly to an emergency call, dispatching a team of firefighters who worked efficiently to cut and clear the fallen tree. Their timely efforts prevented further damage and ensured there were no injuries reported.

Car owners, now facing significant repair costs, expressed frustration over the preventable nature of the incident. “We’re devastated by the damage and shocked that such a risk was left unattended. We urge the authorities to take responsibility and support us with compensation,” said one affected vehicle owner.

Residents in the area have raised alarms about the neglect of aging trees, particularly during monsoon season. “This is a serious warning for the local administration. Trees must be regularly inspected to avoid such dangerous mishaps,” said a concerned resident.

The local panchayat and forest officials have been notified, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause and whether negligence played a role. Calls are growing louder for a comprehensive tree audit in the Calangute region to ensure public spaces are safe during the monsoons.

As Goa braces for more heavy rains, this incident stands as a stark reminder of the risks posed by unmaintained urban greenery — and the need for urgent, preventive action.
