Porvorim Town Square Project Unveiled: ₹120.97 Cr Boost to Goa Tourism

Panaji : In a major boost to Goa’s tourism infrastructure, Hon’ble Minister for Tourism, Shri Rohan A. Khaunte, announced the launch of the ₹120.97 crore Town Square Project in Porvorim, following its approval by the Cabinet. The ambitious initiative aims to redefine urban public spaces and bolster Goa’s position as a year-round cultural tourism destination.

Addressing the media in Panaji, Shri Khaunte highlighted several key projects sanctioned under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme. These include the beautification of the Porvorim creek and the development of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum at Farmagudi, both designed to enrich Goa’s cultural tourism offerings.

A First-of-Its-Kind Urban Cultural Hub

The Town Square in Porvorim is envisioned as a unique heritage-linked development, spread over 11,000 square metres. Designed to serve as a vibrant year-round venue for community engagement and economic growth, the space will host local artisans, cultural entrepreneurs, and public events. Planned amenities include a Market Court, Welcome Court, Fountain Court, Movie Court, Heritage Court, an Ashoka Stambh, and a Clock Tower.

The project, estimated at ₹120.97 crore, is being jointly funded by the Central Government (₹90.74 crore) and the State Government (₹35.32 crore). It is slated for completion by March 2026.

Shri Khaunte expressed his gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Union Minister for Tourism Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, and Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant for their continued support in transforming Goa’s tourism infrastructure. “This project will be a platform for artists, youth, and entrepreneurs, rooted in Goan heritage and designed for the future,” he stated.

Expanding Goa’s Cultural and Spiritual Circuits

The Minister also announced the development of the Rural Circuit from Porvorim to Harvalem under Swadesh Darshan 2.0. The project will enhance the Torda Creek, Malim Jetty, Virlosa, Pomburpa Spring, and Harvalem experience. A spiritual circuit titled Gomant Sarita Poojan will be conducted in Narve, connecting it to the broader Ekadasha Teertha initiative, aligned with Goa’s regenerative tourism model.

Under the coastal component of the scheme, redevelopment plans are also underway in Colva, which will see upgraded public spaces and tourist amenities aimed at enhancing visitor satisfaction.

Focus on Year-Round Tourism and Safety

Shri Khaunte clarified that there is no ban on visiting monsoon tourist attractions like waterfalls, emphasizing that safety protocols are in place. “All necessary safety measures are being taken in coordination with the Forest Department and Goa Forest Development Corporation,” he assured.

He also emphasized the state’s shift towards “Monsoon Tourism,” urging media and tourism stakeholders to support a positive narrative and help position Goa as a 365-day destination.

Transforming Goa’s Tourism Landscape

Over the past three years, the Goa Tourism Department has made significant strides in diversifying its tourism profile. New verticals like eco-tourism, wellness tourism, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions), and adventure tourism are being actively promoted.

To date, nearly ₹400 crore worth of tourism projects have been sanctioned by the Central Government, signaling a transformative era for Goa.

“Amka Bhivpachi Garaj Na” – Confident Yet Committed

In conclusion, Shri Khaunte acknowledged existing challenges in the sector but reaffirmed his confidence in Goa’s tourism brand. “The world knows about Goa and Goans—amka bhivpachi garaj na (we need not be afraid). But yes, some corrections are needed,” he said, referring to issues like unregulated taxi services and touting.

He called upon the media to be an active stakeholder in building a cleaner, more responsible tourism environment for the state.
