Indian Army Contingent Departs for India-Mongolia Joint Military Exercise ‘Nomadic Elephant’
New Delhi: The Indian Army contingent departed today for the 17th edition of the India-Mongolia Joint Military Exercise Nomadic Elephant, scheduled to take place in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from 31st May to 13th June 2025.
Held alternately in India and Mongolia, Nomadic Elephant is an annual bilateral military exercise aimed at enhancing mutual cooperation and interoperability. The previous edition was successfully conducted in Umroi, Meghalaya, in July 2024.
This year, the Indian Army is represented by a 45-member contingent, primarily from a battalion of the Arunachal Scouts, known for their expertise in mountain warfare. The Mongolian Armed Forces will participate with a similar strength, drawn from the elite 150 Special Forces Unit.
The primary objective of the exercise is to bolster joint operational capabilities in semi-conventional operations, particularly in semi-urban and mountainous terrains under the mandate of the United Nations. The training will take place at the platoon level and will include a wide range of activities such as endurance training, reflex shooting, room intervention, small team tactics, rock craft training, and for the first time, cyber warfare elements to enhance the complexity and realism of the exercise.
This joint military engagement offers both armies an opportunity to exchange operational experiences and best practices, reinforcing mutual trust and collaboration. It also reflects the shared commitment of India and Mongolia towards regional peace, stability, and security.
Exercise Nomadic Elephant stands as a strong symbol of the enduring friendship between India and Mongolia, not just in military terms but also in promoting cultural understanding and regional cooperation.
