India on High Alert: Massive Mock Drills, Blackouts Scheduled Under ‘Operation Shield’ on May 31

New Delhi: In a significant move to test and enhance India’s emergency preparedness, the Union Home Ministry has rescheduled the nationwide civil defence exercise under ‘Operation Shield’ to May 31, originally slated for May 29.

As part of this sweeping drill, mock blackouts, emergency sirens, and strategic response mobilizations will take place across six sensitive regions—Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh.

Sources within the security establishment reveal that the drill will simulate wartime or cross-border emergency scenarios, closely resembling the pattern of alerts and readiness drills often seen in high-tension situations, such as cross-border escalations or imminent threats from hostile neighbors.

This exercise comes amid heightened focus on internal security, and the government has directed all state and district authorities involved to ensure complete coordination and public communication. Citizens in the listed regions are advised not to panic during power outages, siren testing, or visible troop movements, as these are part of a controlled simulation.

In a related development, the ministry has released emergency funds to plug critical gaps discovered during the previous round of exercises—suggesting that the government is treating this as a real-time assessment of national defence readiness.

With border states involved and blackout drills hinting at possible electronic warfare preparedness, security analysts interpret the move as a signal of deterrence, possibly in light of recent intelligence assessments or growing regional volatility.
