DM South Goa Prohibits Swimming, Bathing in Natural Water Bodies Amid Monsoon

Panaji: The District Magistrate of South Goa, Margao, has issued a strict prohibition on swimming, bathing, or entering waterfalls, abandoned quarries, rivers, lakes, and other similar natural water bodies within the jurisdiction of South Goa District until further notice.

The order comes in response to the alarming rise in drowning incidents across the district during the monsoon season, particularly at waterfalls and other popular natural sites frequented by locals and tourists alike.

According to the official notification, any individual found violating the order will face legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Furthermore, all Deputy Collectors and Sub-Divisional Magistrates in South Goa have been empowered to monitor compliance with the order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.

They have also been authorized to file FIRs with the concerned police stations or courts and to lodge complaints with the appropriate Judicial Magistrates, ensuring strict enforcement of the directive.

Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution and cooperate with law enforcement during the ongoing monsoon season to prevent further tragedies.
