MoSPI Releases “EnviStats India 2025”: A Comprehensive View of India’s Environmental Trends
Delhi : In observance of World Environment Day, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), Government of India, unveiled the 8th edition of its flagship environmental statistics publication — “EnviStats India 2025” — during the National Workshop on Using Alternate Data Sources and Frontier Technologies for Policy Making held in New Delhi on 5th June 2025.
The report, prepared by the National Statistics Office (NSO), presents an extensive analysis of India’s environmental data in alignment with the UN’s Framework for the Development of Environment Statistics (FDES) 2013. It covers data compiled from a wide range of Government departments and institutions.
Key Highlights from EnviStats India 2025
Rising Energy Output:
Thermal power generation in India rose significantly from 7,92,053 GWh in 2013-14 to 13,26,549 GWh in 2023-24. Simultaneously, electricity from renewable sources surged from 65,520 GWh to 2,25,835 GWh, signaling India’s gradual energy transition.
Boost in Inland Fish Production:
Inland fish production more than doubled, rising from 61.36 lakh tonnes in 2013-14 to 139.07 lakh tonnes in 2023-24, indicating rapid development in aquaculture and freshwater fisheries. Marine fish production also rose from 34.43 lakh tonnes to 44.95 lakh tonnes in the same period.
Temperature Trends:
India’s annual mean temperature increased from 25.05°C in 2001 to 25.74°C in 2024. The minimum and maximum annual temperatures also rose from 19.32°C to 20.24°C and 30.78°C to 31.25°C respectively, pointing to signs of long-term warming.
Rainfall Variability:
Although annual rainfall data between 2001 and 2024 shows significant fluctuations due to monsoon patterns, no consistent upward or downward trend was observed.
Biodiversity Snapshot:
India is home to 1,04,561 faunal species, accounting for a substantial portion of the global total of 16,73,627 species.
Highlights include:
20,613 marine faunal species
9,436 freshwater species
5,023 species in mangrove ecosystems
3,383 species in estuarine ecosystems
A notable 22,404 species in India’s rich soil ecosystem

Environmental Expenditure:
The Environment Sustainability Sector recorded the highest expenditure at ₹2,433.24 crore in 2021–22, followed by increased investments in Natural Resource Conservation, while Agro-Forestry received the least funding.

Structural Enhancements in EnviStats 2025
The publication has been restructured to follow a component-wise format under FDES 2013.
An expert group was constituted to recommend enhancements in content and presentation.
The publication now includes new data on access to electricity, sanitation, and transport, and features a consolidated list of Ramsar Sites based on expert suggestions.
A concordance of national indicators with the UN’s basic set under FDES 2013 has also been provided for reference.
