During his official visit to Switzerland, Goyal met with Swiss government officials and business leaders, where the issue of China’s export controls on critical minerals took center stage.

Key Highlights:

Impact of China’s Export Restrictions

China’s new rules, effective April 4, mandate special export licenses for seven rare earth elements and related magnetic products.

The move is expected to cause short-term disruptions in India’s automotive and white goods sectors, both of which depend on rare earth magnets.

The Commerce Ministry is identifying alternative global sources.

The government is boosting Indian Rare Earths Limited to fast-track domestic production capabilities.

Call for Supply Chain Resilience

“This is a wake-up call for the world—you need trusted partners in your supply chain,” Goyal asserted.

India is positioning itself as a reliable alternative for international companies seeking to diversify away from China.

Auto Industry Seeks Support

India’s automotive sector has urged the government to expedite import approvals for critical rare earth magnets from China.

Discussions are ongoing around production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes to support domestic alternatives.

Startups & Innovation in Focus

Automotive companies are showing strong interest in collaborating with Indian startups, offering funding and pricing support to accelerate innovation.

Goyal noted India is developing emerging technologies to reduce rare earth dependence.

Shifting Industrial Mindsets

> “Indian businesses are becoming bigger and bolder,” Goyal said. “They’re no longer dependent only on subsidies.”

The shift signals a growing maturity in India’s industrial approach toward self-reliance and competitiveness.

Strategic Outlook

Goyal emphasized that while current supply disruptions present challenges, they also offer an opportunity to strengthen India’s manufacturing base and assert its role in global value chains.

“There is opportunity even in this crisis,” he concluded. “India is seen as a trusted partner globally
