Elon Musk Expresses Regret Over Trump Remarks, Signals Potential Thaw in Tensions
Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk publicly expressed regret on Wednesday for several posts he made last week targeting U.S. President Donald Trump, admitting that his comments “went too far” during a heated exchange on social media.
Posting on his platform X, Musk wrote, “I regret some of my posts about President Donald Trump last week. They went too far.” He did not specify which posts he was referring to, but several have already been deleted ; including one in which he signaled support for impeaching the president and another calling Trump’s flagship tax and spending bill a “disgusting abomination.”
The feud, which erupted last week, culminated in Trump declaring their relationship “over” on Saturday, warning of “serious consequences” if Musk were to fund Democratic candidates opposing Republicans who support the controversial bill.
Despite the fallout, Musk’s conciliatory tone on Wednesday appears to have reassured investors. Tesla shares rose 2.3% in pre-market trading following his post, partially recovering from the dramatic sell-off that wiped over $150 billion from the company’s market value last Thursday.
Shawn Campbell, an investor and adviser at Camelthorn Investments, said the possibility of reconciliation remains. “This relationship can be restored ; just likely not to where it once was,” he said, pointing to past instances where Trump had mended ties with other high-profile critics.
Musk, who played a pivotal role in bankrolling Trump’s 2024 campaign with nearly $300 million in donations, had previously been appointed by Trump to lead a federal task force on downsizing the government. However, he stepped down late last month after publicly denouncing the president’s latest tax package, arguing it would sabotage his reform efforts at the Department of Government Efficiency.
Trump, speaking on Monday, left the door slightly ajar for future dialogue. “We had a good relationship, and I just wish him well,” he said, noting he had no intention of discontinuing SpaceX’s Starlink internet service currently used by the White House.
In what some see as a softening stance, Musk responded to a video of Trump’s remarks with a heart emoji on X ; a subtle gesture that some analysts interpret as a step toward de-escalation.
With billions in government contracts and regulatory decisions potentially at stake, political observers and market players alike are watching closely to see whether one of the most high-profile clashes between business and politics in recent years will give way to détente.
