Blaise Metreweli Appointed as First Female Chief of MI6
London : In a historic first for British intelligence, Blaise Metreweli has been appointed as the new chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), becoming the first woman to lead the foreign spy agency since its founding in 1909.
Metreweli, 47, currently serves as MI6’s head of technology informally known as “Q” and brings over two decades of intelligence experience, with operational postings primarily in the Middle East and Europe. She joined MI6 in 1999 and previously held a director-level position in the domestic security agency MI5.
She will take over from Richard Moore, the current MI6 chief, who is set to step down this autumn after a five-year term. In her new role, Metreweli will assume the traditional codename “C”, reserved for the agency’s head.
“I am proud and honoured to be asked to lead my service,” Metreweli said following her appointment. “I look forward to continuing the vital mission of protecting the UK and its interests abroad.”
Prime Minister Keir Starmer, speaking from the G7 summit in Canada, welcomed the appointment, stating: “At a time when Britain faces threats on an unprecedented scale, I know Blaise will provide the excellent leadership needed to defend our country.”
Metreweli takes the helm at a time of mounting global challenges. British intelligence agencies have recently accused Russia of orchestrating sabotage campaigns across Europe to deter support for Ukraine. China remains MI6’s “single greatest priority,” as previously stated by Moore, while MI5 revealed in 2023 that Iran had plotted at least 20 assassination or abduction attempts targeting dissidents in the UK since 2022.
Her appointment marks a significant moment in the evolution of British intelligence leadership. With this development, all three major UK intelligence agencies MI5, GCHQ, and MI6 have now appointed female chiefs. MI5 first broke that barrier in 1992 with Stella Rimington, followed by Eliza Manningham-Buller. GCHQ named its first female director in 2023.
Metreweli studied anthropology at the University of Cambridge and brings both technical acumen and field expertise to her new post qualities likely to serve her well as she confronts the increasingly complex global security landscape.
Her appointment also comes nearly 30 years after Dame Judi Dench portrayed a fictional female head of MI6 in the 1995 James Bond film GoldenEye ; a cultural milestone now echoed by real-world history.
