India’s Exports Rise 2.77% in May 2025; Trade Deficit Narrows to $6.62 Billion

New Delhi :India’s overall exports combining both merchandise and services grew by 2.77% year-on-year in May 2025, reaching $71.12 billion, up from $69.20 billion in May 2024, as per data released by the Commerce Ministry on Monday.

While merchandise exports saw a slight dip, falling to $38.73 billion from $39.59 billion last year, services exports registered strong growth, rising to $32.39 billion from $29.61 billion.

On the import front, total goods and services imports stood at $77.75 billion in May 2025, marginally lower than $78.55 billion a year earlier. This led to a narrowing of the trade deficit to $6.62 billion, compared to $9.35 billion in May 2024.

For the first two months of the current fiscal year (April–May 2025), India’s exports rose 5.75% year-on-year to $142.43 billion, up from $134.69 billion in the corresponding period last year. Imports during the same period increased by 6.52%, reaching $159.57 billion, compared to $149.81 billion in April–May 2024.

However, the cumulative trade deficit for April–May widened slightly to $17.14 billion, from $15.12 billion during the same period last year.

The government credited the export growth to targeted policy measures, especially the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, aimed at enhancing manufacturing competitiveness, boosting foreign investment, and strengthening India’s role in global supply chains.
