Trump Claims Credit for India-Pakistan Ceasefire, PM Modi Firmly Denies

Toronto : Former U.S. President Donald Trump has once again sparked controversy by claiming credit for the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Trump stated, “I was the one who stopped the war between India and Pakistan. I spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi just a day ago. He’s a great person. Now we can make a trade deal with him. I love Pakistan too.”

Trump’s statement came while Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting Canada for the G-7 Summit. A meeting between Trump and Modi was scheduled during the summit, but it didn’t take place due to Trump’s early departure. Instead, the two leaders held a phone conversation.

During the call, PM Modi categorically rejected Trump’s claim of mediation. He clarified that India and Pakistan had agreed to a ceasefire through direct military-level talks without any third-party involvement.

Modi stated, “India has never accepted and will never accept third-party mediation. The ceasefire decision was taken following direct discussions between the military commands of India and Pakistan at Islamabad’s request.”

Trump has made similar claims in the past, asserting that he played a decisive role in establishing peace between the two South Asian neighbors. He even claimed to have threatened to halt trade with both nations if they didn’t agree to stop the conflict. However, the Indian government has consistently dismissed such statements, asserting its sovereign and independent approach to foreign policy.

Experts believe Trump’s repeated claims are largely political, aimed at appealing to his voter base in the U.S. India, meanwhile, continues to reiterate that bilateral matters will only be resolved between the two nations, without external interference.

While Donald Trump continues to credit himself for brokering peace between India and Pakistan, India’s stance remains strong and unambiguous no mediation, no interference.
