Apple Eyes Generative AI to Boost Chip Design Efficiency

Apple’s top hardware executive, Johny Srouji, revealed that the company is exploring generative AI to accelerate the design of its custom chips. Speaking in Belgium at an award event hosted by semiconductor R&D group Imec, Srouji emphasized the importance of using cutting-edge tools like AI-enhanced software from EDA leaders Cadence and Synopsys. He noted that AI can significantly boost productivity in chip design. Reflecting on Apple’s bold 2020 move to switch Macs from Intel to Apple Silicon, Srouji said the company made the leap without a backup plan, underscoring Apple’s commitment to innovation.
