Paris : India’s golden boy of athletics, Neeraj Chopra, delivered a statement performance at the Paris Diamond League on Saturday, clinching the top podium spot with a massive 88.16m throw on his very first attempt. Competing at the Stade Charléty, Chopra’s opening effort set the evening’s benchmark and proved insurmountable for the rest of the field.

Despite three fouls among his six attempts, Chopra’s commanding throw held firm against fierce competition, reinforcing his dominance in the global javelin circuit.

Germany’s Julian Weber Chopra’s familiar rival and a former Diamond League champion came closest with a powerful 87.88m throw in the first round. While Weber maintained consistency throughout the event, he fell just short and had to settle for second place.

Brazil’s Luiz Maurício da Silva made headlines with a personal best of 86.62m in the third round, securing third place and setting a new South American record in the process.

This event marked Chopra’s return to the Paris Diamond League after an eight-year gap. His last appearance in 2017 saw him finish fifth with a then-impressive 84.67m as a junior world champion. His return was nothing short of triumphant.

Chopra’s 2025 season has been nothing less than spectacular. He started the year with a win at the Potch Invitational in South Africa (84.52m), and later shocked the world in Doha by breaching the elusive 90m mark registering a new Indian national record of 90.23m. Though he was narrowly beaten by Weber’s personal best of 91.06m in that meet, the Indian star reaffirmed his form in Paris.

Their rivalry intensified in Poland at the Janusz Kusociński Memorial, where Weber edged out Chopra once again in wet conditions. But in Paris, Chopra struck back with authority.

With this victory, Neeraj Chopra not only strengthened his position in the 2025 Diamond League circuit but also sent a clear message ahead of the grand finale in Zurich this August: he remains one of the most formidable javelin throwers on the planet.
