Burroughs Issues Injunction in Harvard Case Amid Trump Crackdown on Foreign Students, Antisemitism Concerns

Washington : U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs officially issued an injunction Friday to maintain the status quo in the federal government’s case against Harvard University, following a May 29 hearing where she signaled her intention to do so. The action temporarily blocks immediate federal enforcement moves against the university.

This development follows the Department of Homeland Security’s recent shift toward a longer administrative route to challenge Harvard’s certification, after Burroughs initially halted action by the department almost immediately.

Just a week after the court hearing, former President Donald Trump signed a new proclamation targeting Harvard. The order cited concerns about the university’s acceptance of foreign funds, particularly from China, and criticized what it described as Harvard’s insufficient response to federal requests for information about foreign students.

Trump’s administration has further accused the Ivy League institution of fostering an unsafe atmosphere for Jewish students and permitting antisemitism to proliferate on campus. These claims come as American universities continue to experience turmoil over protests related to Israel’s actions in Gaza, with Harvard among those at the center of student demonstrations.

Civil rights groups have noted a broader national rise in both antisemitism and Islamophobia since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict. Despite this, the Trump administration has not taken action in response to a reported spike in anti-Arab and anti-Muslim hate.

Harvard’s own task forces on antisemitism and Islamophobia released findings in late April, revealing widespread fear, hostility, and discrimination affecting both Jewish and Muslim students on campus.

The case against Harvard and the broader policy steps by the Trump administration are expected to have far-reaching implications for academic institutions, international students, and the campus free speech climate in the United States.
