NHAI Launches Nationwide Monsoon Preparedness Drive to Tackle Waterlogging and Ensure Road Safety
New Delhi : With the arrival of the monsoon, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated a 15-day nationwide inspection and preparedness campaign to address waterlogging and monsoon-related disruptions across the country’s national highway network.
The proactive drive involves NHAI officials, contractors, and consultants inspecting vulnerable stretches of highways to identify critical areas at risk of waterlogging, landslides, or structural issues. Special focus is being given to cleaning and desilting rainwater harvesting structures, repairing drains and outlets, and clearing culverts and cross drains to ensure efficient drainage.
Simultaneously, pothole repairs are underway on both main carriageways and slip roads. Weep holes in Reinforced Earth (RE) walls are being cleaned to facilitate better water discharge.
To boost emergency response capabilities, NHAI is deploying excavators, sandbags, and traffic signage at flood-prone zones, while working closely with local authorities and district administrations. Round-the-clock Emergency Response Teams and Quick Response Teams have been activated for real-time site monitoring.
Technology is also being leveraged through AI-based Intelligent Traffic Management Systems, mobile alerts via the Rajmargyatra and IMD Meghdoot apps, and drone surveillance to monitor road conditions and detect cracks for prompt repairs.
