BJP Slams FIR Over Indira Gandhi-Hitler Comparison, Defends Remarks as ‘Stating Facts’
New Delhi : The BJP has strongly reacted to the FIR filed by the Congress against its Karnataka unit over a social media post comparing former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to Adolf Hitler. BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla questioned the basis of the complaint, stating, “Now, will there be an FIR for stating facts? Should we call Indira Gandhi a saint for imprisoning the Constitution during the Emergency?”
Poonawalla defended the comparison, arguing that historical actions should be open to criticism. He further pointed out the alleged hypocrisy, stating, “There are no FIRs against those who call Prime Minister Modi a Hitler and demean him daily.”
The controversy stems from a post made by Karnataka BJP on the anniversary of the Emergency, drawing parallels between Indira Gandhi’s regime and dictatorial rule. Congress has condemned the post as defamatory and misleading, prompting legal action.
The row has reignited debate over free speech, political rhetoric, and historical accountability.
