Maharashtra Govt. Withdraws Decision on Hindi as Third Language in Schools

Mumbai : In response to widespread criticism and public concern, the Maharashtra government has withdrawn its decision to make Hindi the default third language in primary schools.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Sunday that the Government Resolution (GR), which mandated Hindi as the third language under the National Education Policy (NEP), has been officially scrapped. The move comes amid growing protests and opposition from various sections of society who argued it undermined regional linguistic diversity.

To chart a balanced path forward, CM Fadnavis also declared the formation of an expert committee headed by renowned educationist and economist Dr. Narendra Jadhav. The committee will provide recommendations on how best to implement the NEP’s three-language formula in a way that respects local languages and cultural sensitivities.

The Chief Minister reiterated the state government’s commitment to promoting multilingual education without imposing any language on students
