Netanyahu Sees Hostage Deal Opportunity After Iran Conflict
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the recent 12-day war with Iran has created new opportunities, including a potential breakthrough in efforts to secure the release of 50 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza since the October 7, 2023, attack. His comments came as the Jerusalem District Court delayed his testimony in his ongoing corruption trial, citing classified diplomatic and security matters.
Netanyahu’s remarks were welcomed by the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, who said this was the first time the prime minister prioritized the hostages’ return as a national goal. Of the 50 captives, only 20 are believed to be alive.
Israel’s military Chief of Staff noted that the conflict with Iran, which ended June 24, could bolster efforts against Hamas. Meanwhile, U.S. officials are pushing a ceasefire plan involving a 60-day truce, the release of half the hostages, and Palestinian prisoner exchanges.
Hamas has agreed to resume talks but insists any deal must end the war and ensure an Israeli withdrawal. Israel, however, maintains it will not stop fighting until Hamas is dismantled. The Gaza war has claimed over 56,000 Palestinian lives, according to Gaza health officials, and triggered a severe humanitarian crisis.
