Indian Railways to Launch Advanced Passenger Reservation System by Year-End
Indian Railways is set to roll out a next-generation Passenger Reservation System (PRS) by the end of 2025, aiming to make ticket booking faster, smarter, and more passenger-friendly. According to the Ministry of Railways, the upgraded system will generate over 1.5 lakh tickets per minute nearly five times the current capacity of 32,000 and handle more than 40 lakh ticket enquiries per minute.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently reviewed the reform’s progress and emphasized the need for a transparent, efficient, and accessible ticketing system. Highlighting passenger convenience, he said the entire travel experience should be smooth from ticket booking to journey completion.
The reservation chart preparation will now be advanced to eight hours before departure. For trains departing before 2 pm, charts will be prepared the previous evening by 9 pm. This will help passengers from remote areas plan better if their tickets remain unconfirmed.
Developed by CRIS, the upgraded PRS will feature a multilingual, user-friendly interface, enabling seat selection, fare calendar access, and integrated support for Divyangjan, students, and patients.
Additionally, from July 1, only authenticated users can book Tatkal tickets via IRCTC. OTP-based verification using Aadhaar or DigiLocker-linked IDs will be made mandatory by July 2025.
