Indian Navy Commissions Stealth Frigate INS Tamal in Russia
In a significant boost to India’s maritime defence, the Indian Navy commissioned INS Tamal (F 71), a stealth frigate under Project 1135.6, at Yantar Shipyard, Kaliningrad, Russia. The ceremony, attended by Vice Admiral Sanjay Jasjit Singh and senior Indian-Russian officials, marked the induction of the second Tushil-class ship, after INS Tushil in 2024.
Commanded by Captain Sridhar Tata, INS Tamal features BrahMos missiles, Humsa-NG sonar, and advanced weapons systems. Although built in Russia, 26% of its systems are indigenous, supporting Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Vice Admiral Rajaram Swaminathan hailed the ship as the 51st product of Indo-Russian naval cooperation. The frigate completed successful sea trials and is equipped for multi-dimensional warfare with capabilities in air, surface, underwater, and electronic domains.
With a crew of 276, INS Tamal will soon sail to its homeport in Karwar, enhancing India’s naval reach, resilience, and presence across strategic sea lanes.
