WHO Urges 50% Tax Hike on Sugary Drinks, Alcohol, Tobacco to Tackle Health Crisis

The World Health Organization (WHO) is urging countries to raise taxes on sugary drinks, alcohol, and tobacco by 50% over the next decade, aiming to curb rising rates of non-communicable diseases like diabetes and cancer. The campaign, launched at the UN Finance for Development conference in Seville, is titled “3 by 35” and aims to cut consumption of harmful products while generating revenue amid shrinking global aid and rising debt.

“This is one of the most efficient tools we have,” said WHO’s Jeremy Farrar, emphasizing the need for immediate action. WHO estimates the initiative could raise $1 trillion by 2035, citing successful tax models in countries like Colombia and South Africa.

Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the funds could help countries adapt to fiscal pressures and reinforce health systems. WHO also hinted at expanding taxes to ultra-processed foods in the future.

The plan is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies, the World Bank, and the OECD, and will assist governments in implementing reforms despite expected resistance from industry stakeholders.
