PM Modi Conferred Trinidad and Tobago’s Highest Civilian Honour

Port of Spain : Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (ORTT), the nation’s highest civilian award, becoming the first foreign leader to receive the honour. The award was presented by President Christine Kangaloo at a ceremony held at the President’s House.

President Kangaloo praised PM Modi for his “legendary kindness and generosity,” especially highlighting India’s vaccine assistance during the COVID-19 crisis. “Your longstanding contributions and unwavering support have immensely strengthened our ties,” she said.

PM Modi is on his first official visit to Trinidad and Tobago, the second leg of a five-nation tour. He received a ceremonial Guard of Honour at Piarco International Airport and was warmly welcomed by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, ministers, and the Indian diaspora.

The visit aims to deepen cooperation in digital finance, renewable energy, healthcare, and IT. This is the first visit by an Indian PM to the Caribbean nation since 1999.

PM Modi will next travel to Argentina, Brazil where he will attend the BRICS Summit and Namibia before concluding his tour on July 9.
