India Eyes Norway’s Carbon Storage Expertise to Boost Energy Security

Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced that India is exploring energy collaboration with Norway, focusing on advanced carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies. During his visit to the Northern Lights CO₂ Terminal in Bergen, Puri highlighted the project as the world’s largest CCS initiative, supported by Equinor, Shell, and Total Energies.

The terminal can store up to 100 million tonnes of CO₂, using a system that transports emissions from industrial sites to underground storage 2,600 metres beneath the seabed. “Norway’s deepwater exploration, seismic surveys, offshore wind, and CCS expertise align with India’s ambitious energy transition goals,” Puri said.

CCS technology captures CO₂ from power plants and industries, compresses it, and stores it underground to prevent atmospheric release. This technology is vital for reducing emissions from hard-to-abate sectors like cement and steel. The collaboration could significantly strengthen India’s energy capabilities and climate change mitigation efforts.
