Delhi Riots Conspiracy Case: Solicitor General Opposes Bail Pleas of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam

New Delhi : Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing on behalf of the Delhi Police, strongly opposed the bail pleas of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and other accused in the 2020 Delhi riots “larger conspiracy” case before the Delhi High Court.

During the hearing, SG Mehta asserted, “If you’re doing something against the nation, then you better be in jail till you are acquitted or convicted.” The prosecution reiterated that the accused were involved in orchestrating a conspiracy that led to the communal violence in Delhi in February 2020.

The case pertains to the alleged premeditated conspiracy behind the riots, which erupted during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and resulted in widespread violence, loss of life, and property damage.

After hearing detailed arguments from both sides, the High Court has reserved its order on the bail applications.

Khalid and Imam, both student activists, have been in custody under various charges including those under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
