National Fish Farmers Day Celebrated at Curtorim
Curtorim : Fisheries Minister Shri Nilkant Halarnkar attended the celebration of National Fish Farmers Day organized by the Directorate of Fisheries at Curtorim. The event marked a significant occasion in the fisheries sector, commemorating the pioneering efforts of Dr. Hiralal Chaudhuri and Dr. K. H. Alikunhi, who in 1957 successfully induced breeding in Indian Major Carps an achievement that revolutionized inland aquaculture in India.
Curtorim MLA Shri Reginaldo Lourenco, Secretary (Fisheries) Shri Prasanna Acharya, IAS, and Director of Fisheries Dr. Shamila Monteiro were also present at the event, alongside fish farmers, officials, and stakeholders from the fisheries sector.
Speakers highlighted the importance of sustainable aquaculture practices, the need for technological innovation, and government support to boost fish production and livelihood opportunities in the sector. The program also included interactions with progressive fish farmers and discussions on current challenges and future prospects in inland fisheries.
