12 Forts of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Included in UNESCO World Heritage List – A Proud Historic Moment for India

Mumbai: Twelve forts that stand as glorious symbols of the valor of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the architectural brilliance of the Marathas have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This moment is not just a matter of pride for Maharashtra but for the entire nation.

UNESCO has included these forts under the category of “Outstanding Universal Value.” The forts are: Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Panhala, Shivneri, Lohgad, Salher, Sindhudurg, Vijaydurg, Suvarnadurg, Khanderi (all in Maharashtra), and Gingee (Jinji) in Tamil Nadu.

These forts were not merely centers of military strategy but also living symbols of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s visionary leadership, the concept of Swarajya (self-rule), and Marathi identity. Their magnificent hill architecture, deceptive entry points to outwit enemies, well-planned defensive strategies, and supreme structural design reflect the unparalleled legacy of the Maratha Empire.

This global recognition has brought worldwide attention to the radiant legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and stands as the highest validation of our cultural pride.
