PM Modi expressed immense pride, calling it a moment of cultural pride for all Indians

India has achieved a historic milestone as the Maratha Military Landscapes have been inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List during the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris. This marks India’s 44th World Heritage site, celebrating the military and architectural brilliance of the Maratha Empire from the 17th to 19th centuries CE.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed immense pride, calling it a moment of cultural pride for all Indians. The inscription includes 12 forts 11 in Maharashtra and 1 in Tamil Nadu such as Raigad, Shivneri, Rajgad, Sindhudurg, and Gingee. These forts span diverse terrains including hills, forests, plateaus, coasts, and islands.

The nomination was evaluated over 18 months by ICOMOS and approved under UNESCO criteria (iv) and (vi) for their architectural innovation and historical significance. Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis also lauded the recognition.

India, now ranked sixth globally in number of World Heritage Sites, continues to lead through the efforts of the Archaeological Survey of India, with 62 more sites on its Tentative List.
