UIDAI Begins Deactivation of Aadhaar for Deceased Individuals

New Delhib: In a major step to prevent identity fraud, UIDAI has initiated a multi-pronged strategy to deactivate Aadhaar numbers of deceased individuals. Collaborating with the Registrar General of India (RGI), state governments, and banks, UIDAI aims to ensure the integrity of its Aadhaar database.

So far, around 1.55 crore Aadhaar-linked death records from 24 States/UTs have been shared by the RGI, leading to the deactivation of 1.17 crore Aadhaar numbers. Another 6.7 lakh records from non-CRS states are under review.

To empower citizens, UIDAI launched a “Reporting of Death of a Family Member” service on the myAadhaar Portal, enabling online reporting in 24 states using CRS. This initiative will soon expand nationwide.

A pilot program is also verifying Aadhaar holders aged 100+, in partnership with state authorities. UIDAI urges citizens to report deaths on the portal to prevent misuse and maintain the accuracy of India’s digital identity system.
