New Book ‘The Hindi Medium Types’ Questions India’s Colonial Mindset Around English
In his thought-provoking new book The Hindi Medium Types, scientist and author Amitabh Satyam delves into India’s complex relationship with the English language and the colonial mindset it often reflects. Despite India’s linguistic diversity, resistance to English education remains virtually nonexistent a paradox Satyam unpacks with piercing insight.
Originally from Sheohar, Bihar, and an alumnus of IIT Kanpur and Fisher University, USA, Satyam draws from his own journey to illustrate how English in India has evolved beyond a language to become a symbol of status and power. Through personal anecdotes and social commentary, he highlights how local languages, customs, and knowledge systems like Ayurveda and traditional attire are often seen as inferior.
Published in English and Hindi, the book critiques how colonial notions still dominate Indian thinking, with English-language education seen as a gateway to success. Satyam even likens this to a form of “Stockholm Syndrome.”
With nine incisive chapters, The Hindi Medium Types is a timely call to re-evaluate what India values in education, identity, and culture urging a revival of pride in indigenous languages and traditions.
