India Intensifies War on Drugs with Zero-Tolerance Policy

India has adopted a zero-tolerance stance on drug trafficking and abuse, leading to narcotics seizures worth ₹25,330 crore in 2024 a 55% increase from the previous year. Spearheading the crackdown is the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), now operating through 30 zonal and seven regional offices, with 1,496 personnel and advanced Nar-K9 units. Major busts this year include a joint operation with the Navy and Gujarat Police, seizing over 3,100 kg of drugs offshore.

The government’s multi-agency “whole-of-government approach” engages BSF, Coast Guard, Assam Rifles, and cybercrime units, targeting darknet and crypto-based trafficking. Over 1.17 lakh kg of drugs were destroyed under MHA oversight.

On the rehabilitation front, the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) has sensitised 16.5 crore citizens and aided 27.7 lakh individuals via 730 centres. Complementing this, the NAPDDR supports 342 rehab centres and outreach to youth. India’s strategy now blends enforcement with public health and community involvement to achieve a drug-free nation.
