Centre Pushes Sustainable Overhaul of Coal Sector Amid Climate Commitments
The central government is implementing a multi-pronged strategy to make India’s coal sector more sustainable, efficient, and self-reliant, while aligning with global climate goals. Despite the growing use of renewables, coal still supplies 55% of India’s energy. Key initiatives include greening efforts such as afforestation, energy-efficient systems, and reuse of treated mine water for irrigation and community needs.
Public Sector Units (PSUs) are adopting clean technologies like Surface Miners and electric vehicles, along with First Mile Connectivity (FMC) projects for pollution-free coal transport. Overburden is being used to produce M-Sand, reducing river sand mining.
To cut import dependence, the government is fast-tracking coal block allocation, boosting private participation, and deploying digital mining tools. Coal imports fell to 243.6 MT in 2024–25, down from 264.5 MT the previous year.
Enhanced rail connectivity and upgraded logistics aim to improve domestic supply. Through these measures, the coal sector is being modernized to balance energy needs with environmental responsibility.
