Women’s Representation in GST Shows Growth: SBI Report

India now has over 1.52 crore active GST registrations, and notably, 20% of these have at least one woman in business ownership, while 14% are entirely women-led, reveals an SBI Economic Research Department report. The presence of women is especially strong in LLPs and private limited companies, reflecting growing gender inclusivity in formal business structures.

Dr. Soumya Kanti Ghosh, SBI’s Group Chief Economic Advisor, noted that this trend aligns with women comprising 15% of income taxpayers and 40% of deposit holders. Gross GST collections have doubled between FY21 and FY25, averaging ₹2 lakh crore monthly.

While six states now cross ₹1 lakh crore in annual GST collections, some richer states like Telangana and Tamil Nadu underperform in active GST registrations compared to their GSDP share. In contrast, states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar outperform, highlighting untapped GST potential.

As GST completes eight years, the report underscores its equalising effect and role in economic formalisation.
