Rahul Gandhi’s Remarks Against CEC Baseless and Misleading, Says ECI
New Delhi : The Election Commission of India (ECI) has strongly responded to recent remarks made by Congress leader Shri Rahul Gandhi regarding the conduct of the Karnataka Lok Sabha Elections 2024, calling the allegations unwarranted and threatening.
In a detailed clarification issued today, the ECI pointed out that:
1.) Regarding the electoral rolls for Karnataka, not a single appeal was filed by the Indian National Congress (INC) with the District Magistrate or the Chief Electoral Officer, Karnataka—a valid legal remedy under Section 24 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950.
2.) Furthermore, out of the 10 election petitions filed post the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, not a single petition was filed by any losing Congress candidate. Filing such a petition is a well-defined legal remedy under Section 80 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
Given this context, the ECI spokesperson questioned the timing and intent behind Rahul Gandhi’s recent statements, stating:
“The Commission is wondering why such baseless and threatening allegations are being made against the Chief Election Commissioner, and that too now?”
The ECI emphasized that it is committed to free and fair elections and urged all stakeholders to approach concerns through appropriate legal channels rather than making unfounded public accusations.
