Tata Group Announces ₹1 Crore Compensation to Families of Air India Flight 171 Crash Victims

Ahmedabad : In a profound gesture of support and solidarity, Tata Group Chairman N. Chandrasekaran on Thursday announced a compensation of ₹1 crore to the families of each victim who lost their life in the tragic crash of Air India Flight 171 near Ahmedabad.

Chandrasekaran also stated that the Tata Group will cover all medical expenses for the injured passengers and ensure they receive full medical care and support. “No words can adequately express the grief we feel at this moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones, and with those who have been injured,” he said in an official statement.

As part of the group’s broader support efforts, Chandrasekaran added that the Tata Group would also assist in building a new hostel at B.J. Medical College.

“We remain steadfast in standing with the affected families and communities during this unimaginable time,” he emphasized.

Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata also expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. “This heart-wrenching incident has brought immense grief to countless families, and our thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones today,” he said, offering heartfelt condolences and assuring solidarity with the bereaved families.

The incident involved Air India Flight 171, en route from Ahmedabad to London, which tragically crashed shortly after takeoff. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the aircraft had 242 people on board, including ten crew members.

The DGCA report stated that the plane took off from Runway 23 at 1:39 p.m. and issued a MAYDAY distress signal moments later. However, no further communication was received. The aircraft crashed just beyond the airport perimeter and was engulfed in thick black smoke.

The flight was being commanded by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, with First Officer Clive Kundar as the co-pilot. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
