IMD issues red alert for Goa, predicts heavy rain

PANAJI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised a ‘red’ alert for Goa, indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall in the coastal region within the next 24 hours.

According to the IMD’s nowcast weather warning, the forecast anticipates

“moderate to heavy bout rain, accompanied by wi reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour, w gusts up to 60 kmph.”

The IMD noted the presence of clouds in the morning over the talukas (administrative regions) of Pernem, Tiswadi, Bardez, Bicholim, and Sattari, all located in the North Goa district of the state. “More clouds are approaching from the Arabian Sea. More talukas are also likely to get affected as clouds are moving generally in the north-eastern direction,” IMD has said.

The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has initiated the activation of its control centers in both the North and South Goa districts.

“Extremely heavy rains are forecast for Goa in the next 24 hours. Members of the public are advised not to venture into waterlogged or flood- prone areas, the SDMA said.

Drishti Marine, the state government- appointed lifesaving agency, advised people not to venture into the sea due to the high water levels and rough weather conditions.
