Death traps on Porvorim-Mapusa road.
MAPUSA: The road from Porvorim to Mapusa has become very risky, dangerous and accident prone these days. Motorists throw traffic rules and norms to winds, especially when it is raining monkeys and donkeys. One can witness rash and negligence driving by two-wheeler riders and four wheeler drivers when the road construction work is in progress.
The National Highway -66 is always busy and as such there are traffic signals in between despite that there is always a race and chase. Traffic jam and congestion have become an order of the day, particularly during peak hours in the morning as well as in the evening.
The sloppy road has become so dangerous as there is mud, gravel found spread on it which increases the chances of slipping either by knocking towards right or left or ramming directly into the bhumper in front as there is such a heavy rush to either reach office or college on time during morning hours while in the evening there is same kind of traffic trying rush back to their houses and residents.
The movement of vehicles becomes horrible and usher in the era of snail’s speed after the sunset as everyone is rushing towards their destination amidst honking and blaring sounds of the buses, trucks, 4-wheelers, three wheelers and two-wheelers.
Above all the stray animals too contribute towards the traffic congestion by forming hurdles in the middle of the roads near traffic signals while climbing the Porvorim slope and vehicles waiting for the green signals near “Eat Street” . The haphazard filling of the potholes, and washing out of mud filling on the potholes make riding risky and dangerous.
No doubt there are sparsely spread traffic police on the roads to curb, curtail, control and streamline vehicular traffic during peak hour rush but very few of them are seen concentrating on their duties as most of the time traffic flies out of their control and they have to be just a mute spectators to the happening.
The Mapusa_Porvorim road has become too narrow now-a-days as there is fly-over and over – bridge work is in full-swing and due water loggings during rainy season motorists try to escape potholes as it would splash water either on the pedestrians walking by the side of the roads or the vehicles passing-by on their sides.
