Calangute Panchayat Cracks Down on Garbage Dumping at Baga Beach
Calangute: The Calangute panchayat has taken a strong stance against the dumping of garbage at Baga Beach and has issued a stern notice to the tourism department, demanding immediate removal of the waste. The dumping site, located near the pay-toilets in Tito’s Lane, Sauntavaddo, has raised serious concerns regarding public health and environmental safety.
Calangute sarpanch Joseph Sequeira stated that the site had turned into a dumping ground for waste collected from beach shacks in the Calangute-Candolim belt and even Nerul. Despite the tourism department’s claims of garbage segregation, Sequeira described the site as a “dump yard” with a foul stench, making it a major nuisance for both locals and tourists.

The panchayat has given the tourism department a seven-day deadline to clear the site. If no action is taken, the panchayat will intervene under the provisions of the Goa Panchayat Raj Act and the Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act to clean up the area.
This development underscores the urgent need for sustainable tourism practices and efficient waste management in Goa’s popular beach destinations. While the tourism department’s efforts in garbage segregation are acknowledged, the situation demands more proactive and effective measures to prevent such environmental hazards in the future.
