Youths urged to drive cautiously as deaths, mishaps on the rise in Goa.
MAPUSA: In view of rising deaths and tremendous increase in road accidents, Goa Government has urged all the municipalities to observe “ National Road Safety Week” to create awareness amongst the members of the general public including parents and students besides road users from October 14 to October 20.
Mapusa Municipal council on Monday to took out a procession led by the Mapusa Municipal Council chairperson, Dr Nutan Bicholkar,along with Chief Executive Officer, officials, clerical staff, students and others waving a green flag, holding placards with traffic signals amidst shouting of slogans “ Road safety, Life safety” “Drive cautiously, reach home safely,” ” Eye distraction causes destruction,” so on and so forth after vending through the busy roads converged at the Municipality and dispersed.
The chairperson stressed upon the need to educate today’s youth about the traffic norms and rules. “Vehicle riders and drivers need to be highlighted about traffic rules and create an awareness amongst them with a hope that it will surely decrease deaths and accidents in future. The CEO and officials also spoke on the occasion.
Earlier, the staff of the Municipality administered the pledge to the students and staff of the municipal council stating “I pledge that, I will pay attention to all safety -related matters before driving/riding on the road. I will always follow the rules of the road and traffic. I will ensure my own safety and also of all the fellow travellers on the road. I will work diligently in a dedicated manner towards road safety and inspire others to be educated and aware. I will always try to help individuals affected by accidents on the road and continually contribute to the development of a clean, healthy and safe road culture.
They also revealed the Chief minister, Dr Pramod Sawant in a press meet that in Goa everyday one person dies and injures 10 persons, and added that the need of the hour is that we should drive/ride our vehicles cautiously by strictly following the road and traffic norms. We cannot afford to lose our precious lives especially of young blood on the roads in accidents every day.
First of all we need to shun rash and negligent driving on the roads and securing our lives is the need of the hour.
Even the chief minister stated that accidents and reckless driving are on the rise and it is not only Transport Department’s sole responsibility but also of the general public to ensure road safety. He was addressing the gathering after inaugurating the ceremony of 13th State Road Safety Week 2024.
