India’s Foreign Policy Under PM Modi: A Decade of Assertive Global Leadership
New Delhi : Over the past eleven years, the Narendra Modi-led government has fundamentally reshaped India’s foreign policy, transitioning from a traditionally reactive posture to a proactive, assertive, and strategically aligned global presence. Rooted in the principles of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, and Sabka Prayas,” India’s diplomatic approach has become more inclusive, development-oriented, and focused on long-term national interests.
Neighborhood First & Regional Vision
At the heart of India’s foreign policy is the ‘Neighborhood First’ strategy, aimed at deepening ties with immediate neighbors. This is bolstered by complementary frameworks such as ‘Act East,’ ‘Think West,’ and ‘Connect Central Asia,’ reflecting a comprehensive vision for regional integration. The doctrine of Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) further reinforces India’s commitment to maritime cooperation and regional peace.
Indigenous Defense and Strategic Self-Reliance
India has made significant strides in strengthening its indigenous defense capabilities. The commissioning of the indigenously built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant symbolizes a leap in self-reliant defense production. Through initiatives like Innovation for Defence Excellence (iDEX), the government has empowered startups and innovators to contribute cutting-edge solutions, enhancing India’s strategic autonomy and defense preparedness.
Humanitarian Diplomacy and Global Responsiveness
India has emerged as a global humanitarian leader, consistently stepping up as a ‘First Responder’ during crises. The formation of a dedicated Rapid Response Cell within the Ministry of External Affairs has streamlined disaster response mechanisms. Landmark missions such as Operation Dost (2023), Operation Ganga (2022), Operation Devi Shakti (2021), and Mission Sagar (2020) have earned international praise for India’s swift and effective humanitarian outreach.
Global Leadership and Multilateral Engagement
India’s growing international stature is evident through its leadership in global initiatives. The International Solar Alliance (ISA), Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), and the Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) movement underscore India’s commitment to sustainable development and global climate action. These initiatives have enhanced India’s credibility as a constructive and forward-thinking global player.
G20 Presidency: A Landmark Moment
India’s G20 presidency in 2023 marked a diplomatic high point. Under the theme “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (One Earth, One Family, One Future), India emphasized global interconnectedness and inclusive growth. A major diplomatic achievement was India’s successful push to include the African Union as a permanent G20 member, reflecting its advocacy for the Global South and emerging economies.
Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stewardship, India’s foreign policy has become a transformative force, asserting its place as a responsible and influential global power. With a focus on regional stability, defense innovation, humanitarian leadership, and global cooperation, India is steadily shaping a multipolar and inclusive world order.
