Mapusa: The Chenab Railway Bridge, constructed amidst the rugged mountain ranges of Jammu and Kashmir, stands as a unique and proud symbol of Indian engineering. It is the world’s highest railway bridge, with a height of approximately 359 meters—taller than the Eiffel Tower.
The construction of this grand project faced several technical and geographical challenges. Indian engineers overcame all odds and put their skills to the ultimate test to successfully complete this bridge. The bridge is not just an engineering marvel, but also a symbol of national unity and connectivity.
However, this historic project encountered legal hurdles. Senior advocate Prashant Bhushan filed a petition in the Supreme Court opposing the bridge. He cited concerns related to environmental impact, safety, and other risks. As a result, the project remained stalled in court for nearly two years, causing delays in actual construction work.
Representing the government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and senior advocate Maninder Singh argued vigorously, effectively presenting the importance and safety assurances of the project. Eventually, the Supreme Court granted clearance to proceed, thus saving the nation from a major developmental setback.

Why Did Prashant Bhushan Oppose the Chenab Railway Bridge?
Prashant Bhushan is a senior Supreme Court advocate who has filed multiple public interest litigations (PILs) over the years, primarily focusing on environmental issues, human rights, and public welfare. His intent, more often than not, is to question large-scale projects on grounds of “public interest” and “public safety.”
Possible Reasons for His Opposition to the Chenab Bridge:
1. Environmental Concerns
The Chenab Bridge is located in the Himalayan region, which is earthquake-prone, ecologically rich, and environmentally sensitive. Prashant Bhushan may have believed that the project could potentially harm the local environment.
2. Protection of Local Communities
Large infrastructure projects often displace local tribal or village communities. If proper rehabilitation isn’t ensured, lawyers and activists often raise their voices in court. Bhushan may have questioned the impact on such communities.
3. Safety and Technical Concerns
According to some reports, Bhushan raised doubts regarding the structural design of the bridge, the risks posed by its extreme height, and whether safety norms were strictly followed during construction.
