Amit Shah Releases ‘The Emergency Diaries’, Highlights Modi’s Underground Role

New Delhi : Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday released the book “The Emergency Diaries – Years that Forged a Leader”, chronicling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s role during the 1975-77 Emergency. The event, held on ‘Savidhan Hatya Diwas’ in the capital, was attended by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Delhi Lt. Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, and Delhi CM Rekha Gupta.

Calling the Emergency “a dark chapter in Indian democracy,” Shah said the book offers rare insights into Modi’s life as a 25-year-old RSS pracharak. He revealed how Modi went underground, disguising himself as a saint, Sardarji, hippie, incense stick seller, and newspaper vendor to evade arrest and support the resistance movement led by Jayaprakash Narayan and Nanaji Deshmukh.

Modi, Shah said, distributed underground newspapers, assisted families of those jailed under MISA, and helped arrange medical aid. He described Modi’s actions as an early resistance against authoritarianism.
The book, published by BlueKraft Digital Foundation, is divided into five chapters covering censorship, state repression, Sangh’s role, victim stories, and the revival of public governance.

Shah urged youth to read the book to understand how democracy was defended and preserved during one of India’s most turbulent periods.
