Delhi Scorches Under Intense Heatwave, Red Alert Issued; Relief Expected from June 13
New Delhi : The national capital continued to reel under an intense heatwave on Wednesday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for Thursday as temperatures soared dangerously above normal levels. Residents across Delhi experienced blistering heat, compounded by high humidity that pushed the heat index to a staggering 51.9 degrees Celsius.
According to IMD data, mercury levels on Wednesday ranged between 40.9°C and 45°C across different parts of the city. Ayanagar was the hottest location at 5:30 p.m., recording a sweltering 45°C, followed closely by Palam at 44.5°C, Ridge at 43.6°C, Pitampura at 43.5°C, Safdarjung at 43.3°C, and Lodhi Road at 43.4°C. Even the relatively cooler Mayur Vihar reported a severe 40.9°C.
The IMD warned that these temperatures are 3–4°C above seasonal norms, sustaining dangerous heatwave conditions likely to persist through Thursday. The red alert ; the IMD’s highest warning level ; advises citizens to take urgent precautions such as staying indoors during peak afternoon hours, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding prolonged sun exposure.
Thursday’s forecast indicates maximum temperatures between 43°C and 45°C, with gusty winds of 40–60 kmph expected during the day. There is also a possibility of very light to light rain or thunderstorms in the evening or night, which may offer slight respite.
Relief on the Horizon
From Friday, June 13, a gradual decline in temperature is anticipated, prompting the IMD to downgrade its advisory to an orange alert. Between June 14 and 17, temperatures in Delhi are forecast to drop to a range of 37°C to 42°C. This will likely be accompanied by light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds, providing much-needed relief from the extreme heat.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and take necessary heat-safety measures until the expected improvement in weather conditions.
