India Developing Agni-5 Variant with Bunker-Buster Capability Following US Strikes on Iran

In a significant strategic development, India is reportedly working on an advanced variant of its Agni-5 intercontinental ballistic missile, designed to carry a massive 7,500-kg conventional bunker-buster warhead.

The move comes in the wake of the United States launching precision strikes on Iran’s underground nuclear facilities using bunker-buster bombs, signaling a shift in modern warfare tactics.

According to credible reports, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is spearheading the project to develop this modified version of the Agni-5 missile, aimed at enhancing India’s conventional long-range strike capabilities.

Unlike the nuclear-armed version of Agni-5, this new variant will carry a high-yield, deep-penetration conventional warhead capable of neutralizing fortified underground military targets and command bunkers.

Strategic analysts see this development as part of India’s evolving missile doctrine, focusing on counterforce capabilities and precision-strike options in the face of growing regional threats.

While no official confirmation has been issued by the Ministry of Defence, sources indicate that testing of the upgraded missile platform could begin in the coming months.
